Apply for Marriage Allowance online

Marriage Allowance lets you transfer 拢1,260 of your Personal Allowance to your husband, wife or civil partner. It鈥檚 free to apply for Marriage Allowance.

This can reduce their tax by up to 拢252 every tax year (6 April to 5 April the next year).

You can apply for Marriage Allowance if all the following apply:

  • you鈥檙e married or in a civil partnership
  • you do not pay Income Tax or your income is below your Personal Allowance (usually 拢12,570)
  • your partner pays Income Tax at the聽basic rate, which usually means their income is between 拢12,571 and 拢50,270 before they receive Marriage Allowance

You can backdate your claim to include any tax year since 5 April 2020 that you were eligible for Marriage Allowance. If your partner has since died you can still claim - phone the Income Tax helpline.

If at least one of you was born before 6 April 1935, you might pay less tax as a couple by applying for the Married Couple鈥檚 Allowance instead of Marriage Allowance.

Before you apply

To use this service, you鈥檒l need your National Insurance number and your partner鈥檚 National Insurance number.

If you have come to the UK and you do not plan to work or study, you cannot get a National Insurance number. Phone the Income Tax helpline to apply for Marriage Allowance.

You鈥檒l need to sign in to use this service. If you do not already have sign in details, you鈥檒l be able to create them.

You鈥檒l be told when you sign in if you need to prove your identity. This is to keep your details safe and usually involves using photo ID like a passport or driving licence.
